Picked up a 2002 A6 brochure tonight for a friend...some details...(long)...
- Finman, please note: I was wrong about the shifter template surround. Brochure shows (and I checked this on the actual 2002 model on the lot) template to be 1/2-3/4 inch shorter in length than current models. The eye (at least mine) doesn't notice the difference, though.
- "Wine glass" (re-constituted as two words!) wheels are now optional. 5-spoke standard.
- "Beige" leather replaces "melange." Pictures make beige appear less rich-looking/more neutral than current melange.
- Gray polished birch wood is S6 only, and only on black or silver exterior cars. Brochure has photo of this wood in a full front interior shot. It's pretty subdued/monchromatic with dark leather colors (too much so for my taste).
- Ebony and platinum are two cloth colors.
- "Silver" leather interior is an S6-only option. Lighter by far (almost white, as on S4's I've seen) than platinum.
- All S6 photos were of silver cars except for the side-on small shot on the model-comparison page which showed Atlas (dark) gray. Only other exterior colors shown in photographs of cars: Crystal blue, Ming, black. (Sorry, no Amulet red, except for that model-comparison page on a 2.7, but those are not good photographs, really.)
- Neither of two beige exterior colors are available on Avants. Go figure. Crystal blue either.
- Cool "sell copy" on the S6: "A tradition of anything-but-ordinary Avants runs deep at Audi. Introducing the 2002 S6 Avant. Start with Quattro. Add a 40-valve V8 with 340 hp: A 4.2 liter archetype of oomph. This combination of absolutely astounding performance and obvious utility is simply not available anywhere else. At any price.
S6 Avant: At Audi, S means something special. It is no mere marketing moniker. We know instinctively when it's time to build one. With an S, we both acknowledge the past and look far out to the future. The S stands for sport. Sport in the truest sense of the word. A sense of play to be sure, but serious about winning as well."
- Very hard to tell the color difference between Irish and Goodwood greens from the color chips. Irish looks to be the lighter.
Post any specific questions if you like today, and I'll try to answer. Then I send the brochure on to my friend.
2. Yes. Only with Ming. Vanilla/ebony available with silver, black, and Amulet red.
3. See 2.
4. "High and low beam xenon headlights" show up as part of "premium package" on all models except S6 (where I assume they throw 'em in for free after you toss over your 67 large).
Cheers.
Either ebony or "silver" leather/Alcantra in each of the following exterior colors: silver, black, Ming, Polar White, Pearl White, Amulet Red, Atlas Gray (S6 exclusive color), Goodwood green (also, S6 exclusive color).
Seems a tad odd to me that a beige (nee Melange) option does not exist for the S6, especially in Amulet or Goodwood variants. WHAT DO I KNOW?

All exterior colors get:
a. grey birch wood
b. choice of silver or black leather or alcantara
So, exactly what I thought before this...I got confused.
Alcantara is a bargain at $250 (of course since it is really polyester, it is saving them money since leather must cost more than that fabric).
