Default Question from the S4 board about A6 oil consumption...

...my business neighbor has a '01 2.8 that burns 1 qt. of oil every 2000 miles. The dealer told her this is normal?! Well, is it? What should she expect for oil consumption? Thanks.

Default Wow, almost an hour and no answers!! This board is about as active as the rec room at...

...a geriatric ward!!! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Just kidding, I'll be more patient. Guess I am just use to the hustle and bustle over on the S4 board.

Default Not Normal! Would this be considered normal on ANY vehicle? (Yugo's excepted)

We may be geriatric but if you don't get a reply, it's because the anwser is so self evident.

We're smart.

Default Not as many 2.8'ers on this board as 2.7's and 4.2's...

Give it a couple hours and one of our resident 2.8's will chime in.

Default You would think as I would, but when the dealer has repeatedly said so it's worthy of posting/asking

Wouldn't you agree? Come on, no harm in asking... but thanks for your sarcastic (and lacking wit) comeback.

Default Even a 2.7t typically uses less than a quart between changes.

I have had two A6 2.7ts, a 2000 and a 2001, and niether one required any oil between changes. The oil change interval for the 2000 was 7500 miles, the 2001 is 5000 miles. Of course the turbo motor typically burns more than the 2.8. It is possible that the rings have never seated properly, in which case some hard driving may take help to break them in. My 2000 burned quite a bit of oil until I started getting on it at 1000 miles or so, then the oil consumption went to almost zero.

I have heard that AOA will accept oil consumption as bad as 1 quart per 1000 miles or even worse. It may be possible to force the issue by going to the EPA and claiming that the car is polluting due to the excessive oil use. By the way, my Acura didn't start using that much oil until about 150,000 miles and even then most of the oil was actually leaking out of a seal. In addition you could see smoke coming out the exhaust whenever I would accelerate hard, meaning that the car was certainly polluting.
