A6 4.2 tire pressure question
My Audi tchnical specialist says that 38 psi is the correct tire pressure for winter tires per the door jam sticker (stock size 255/40 17). My independent tire professional says 34 psi per the same sticker. Being the technical idiot that I am (I'm the one who had to buy new wheels to fit over my brakes), I have no idea who is correct.

38 psi is what I run in my 4.2's winter set up (more)
My tire guy said you can get away with 34 PSI but that it is not a good idea. Each 10 degree drop in air temp equals about a 1 PSI drop in tire pressure. If you are at 34 and the temp drops 40 degrees your tires are then down to 30 PSI. I run Pilot Alpins (225's) at 38 PSI and it works perfect for ride,handling and traction.

Split the difference...
I've found that 36 PSI is the best compromise between handling a ride with my 255/40R17 ContiSports. The sports suspension doesn't seem to need a lot of help from the tires. For winter, I've gone narrower with 225/55R16s that had 34 PSI recommended and, once again, I've found that 36 PSI works best, because these tires do need a bit of extra air to help their handling.

I'm also confused about winter tire pressures. My 2001 2.7T's manual
says snow tires should be run at 3 psi higher than regular tires. That would be 37 psi on my car for 1-3 people & 215/55/R16. However the door sticker says 38 front & 42 back for 205/55/R16 M+S. I posted a question about this on the wheel & tire forum, but no one answered about why the rear pressure would be higher than the front. I figure with 1-3 people, most of the weight (engine, transmission and at least 1 or 2 people) are forward of the center line. Why not the higher pressure in the front?
In any case, with my 215/55/R16 Nokian Hakka-Q's, I've decided to stay with 37 - 38 psi all around for now.
