New S6 Impressions. Better than the 2.7T? (long)
Went to Nubble Lighthouse in Southern ME so that I could drive the coastal route from Perkins Cove, south to the Light. (That's Lynda trying to get her turn behind the wheel.) This is 2 lane, 90+ degree lefts and immediate rights, posted 25 (with good reason) on a well maintained but highly used during summer by tourists and frost heaved during off season lightly traved road this time of year.
Driving impressions:
Chassis is noticably stiffer than '00 A6 2.7T sedan. Suspension is much firmer and steering greatly improved in feel, feedback and accuracy. Not dead like a BMW M3 and not disconnectedly overboosted like some other Audi's. Supple is a good word for it, not harsh like some A6 aftermarket mods but firm. So firm that I'd hate to think of what I'd have to hit to bottom this suspension. Probably worry more about bending a rim.
Speed and acceleration was limited on the coastal route and that's just fine with me. I'm breaking in this baby and besides, speed is for a closed course where you don't scare the natives.
I LIKE the Tip. The 2.7T is a 6-speed and the shifting just isn't fast. It is accurate and you don't miss a shift, but it just doesn't feel like the shift ramps are smooth. With almost 30K on it, the 2.7 isn't going to get any more break-in; any more break-in is wear-out. Again to compare, the (older) M3 shifting is clearly superior. The shift buttons on the wheel make changes positive. I miss the radio controls for when I'm not going fast. I don't like taking my hands off the wheel to change anything.
This car want to go; wants to run; and I could barely restrain the car (myself) to stay below 80 on rt495 coming home. Quiet is noteworthy; better from less leakage around the door seals. Maybe it's my imagination, but there is less distortion as well in the glass and the thicker glass contributes to the quiet. The only engine sound is when you stick it. I can hardly wait until I can kick hard and hear the 4.2 sing up to redline.
Overall -- is there any doubt that I LOVE IT?
I ordered 235/45R17 Pirelli Snowsport 210 and Mille Miglia wheels for the S6 and the same tire only in 205/55R16 for Lynda's 2.7T. I'll have to see how radically the steering changes and suspension feels with these. But look at the picture and imagine going through any snow with those brand-new treds, I can't.

Can you help me swap a wagon body onto my 2.7T?
Sounds like a great car.

Seriously Gerry, I'm usually only going to 5 or 6k these days, (at every opportunity.)
