Default New S6 is perfect...

Two days short of 6 months after placing a deposit and ordering the Amulet S6 Avant finally it was in our hands...
Unfortunately, we could not wait for our salesguy to get back from vacation...we arrived 3 miles away...and we hadta' go get it. We took a quick salesmanager delivery, and will go back for the "formal", albeit, unnecessary full "delivery" later this week. Wanna go through it all with our man, Alberto.

First impressions..."WOW"!!! Damn, Amulet IS the color to get...no regrets at all...this is the color this car was meant to be (at least for us)

Interior: oooweeee, nice...Alcantara is awesome...man, it's all around you in there...doors, roof, seats, everywhere
Seats: essentially the same as the A6 sport seats, nice, I like 'em, Alcantara makes 'em softer on the ***, and grippier, otherwise no difference.
Dash: love the greyish wood. Gauges are actually ok with the chrome rings...much better than I thought. There is a reversal from previous models...the numbers now light up red and the needles are now white. The white causes a slightly bluish glow in the rings when lit up in the dark. Otherwise the dash area is very similar to previous A6s.
Minimal use of the stereo, but sounds good so far, to my tin ear. Haven't tried the CD changer, however.
Trunk: very nicely appointed...the "carpeting" is softer and more plush than the coarse stuff in the trunk of the A6 sedan. At least it comes with a cargo net...but it's definitely gonna need a protective tray/liner.
Windshield: perfect...absolutely no imperfections...looked at it from many, many angles...must be a different supplier...this one is way clearer than my already pretty good 4.2 windshield.
Headroom: same up front, but the rear seems more spacious for the cranium...also no deep buckets in the back, like the 4.2.

Exterior: love the aluminum roof rails, love the black "things" on the doors, unclear whether to anodize the chrome around the windows, on the rear hatch, and around the grille. Should all that chrome stay chrome to nearly match the brushed aluminum mirrors and roof rails, or change to black to match the "thingies" on the doors??? Still unclear, but as long as we're undecided...they'll stay chrome. Did I mention Amulet is the perfect color for this car?!

Driving:
The wife took the first run and within one mile had already almost redlined it...damn, this thing is easy to rev...nice and powerful...nice growling...kept it under control, thereafter...she felt the steering to be "stiff" at speed...quite pleasantly light at low speeds though.
I will leave out things like engine performance and acceleration, except to say it's easier to get the revs up quickly and can push you back in the seat pretty hard with little effort. No real attempts at "blasting" were ventured...I can make no comment on overall acceleration vs the 4.2. It was driven very gently by both of us...mostly due to the traffic conditions and the break-in damage prevention.
Overall feel...it seems like I'm riding a little lower than in the 4.2, but I believe its true ride height to be exactly the same. The floatiness of the 4.2 is eliminated. The ride is firmer, yet still very comfortable. It is very flat around turns. Flatter than the 4.2, which I find quite flat. Somehow it feels "lighter" than the 4.2...I don't know why, but I suspect it may be because it may be better balanced front to back (although I don't KNOW if that is true). The steering wheel feel is excellent. I like the 4.2's also. It is fairly light at low speeds...very easy to make this big beast turn while parallel parking...but on the road at speed (60-80) the wheel is dead solid...no play at all, firm, dead center...it will take a deliberate intent and effort to make this alter its path. It's not difficult to move...but it doesn't wander around on its own...you need to make the steering wheel move. Very nice.
Quietness: Well, I don't really know how they did it...I didn't get out my micrometer or anything to check the glass thickness...but this car is significantly quieter inside than the 4.2 (which I already find pleasingly quiet)...less wind noise mostly, perhaps a little less road noise...perhaps the Alcantara has some role in this quietness.
Engine growl: pleasant...easier to elicit than in the 4.2, but not overbearing in any way...if you don't push too hard, you won't even hear it.

Onlookers: oooocccchhhhh...this thing gets noticed!!! I think more people were staring and pointing at this car in 2 hours today then I have seen in 13 months with the silver 4.2. We hit Zachary's for the finest pizza grub west of Chicago (which, incidentally was incredibly tasty again today and throughout the drive through the streets of Oakland and Berkeley numerous closet Amulet lovers (or perhaps they were mocking us?)...were turning their heads and drivers were hitting passengers to "take a look at that". There was a group of 4 people standing around it when we got out of Zachary's...seemed to be oooing and ahhhing...but who knows, maybe they were giggling I was hoping a wagon would be kinda stealthy, but we received some extended looks by both a Berkeley cop and a Fairfield cop...so I guess Amulet CAN be seen by the police...damn, I thought it was invisible!

One other thing the wife noticed...she says I now refer to the 4.2 as "the other car" or "the 4.2", not "my car" like I used to...hmmm...
Actually, I am fairly certain, that as a daily driver, the wife will be taking the S6 and I will be taking "my car"...which is fine with me. I will have plenty of time in both and I love both cars...I don't want to "stop" driving the 4.2 to drive the S6...I just wanna drive 'em both...there'll be plenty of time for that...

Damn, looks like rain tomorrow...I guess I get to clean it for the first time Tuesday or Wednesday

More to come as it comes to me and I get to loosen it up a bit

Thanks to all those who have humored me and have seemed to anticipate this arrival almost as much as we have...it's been a long but fun wait

Default Woohoo! Terrific... sounds just like the times I've driven one. Have to see that Amulet in person.

So, when can you and the missus drive out for a weekend lunch with Shiera, the rabbits, and me? And perhaps a dozen other A6/S6 drivers??

Default Did you cringe a little when the misses revved it so far so soon?

I did the same thing when I was going back to dealership from my home with my salesman following me with my trade in. I put it in Tip and forgot to shift. DOH! Similar situation with Sport mode too. That Sport mode just doesn't want to shift at brand-new-car revs, does it?
WTG Dog! You have the most desired wagon on this planet!
PS, fwiw, the anodizing guy here in town didn't recommend doing that to the brightwork around my S6. He said it wouldn't be durable enough. He recommended powder-coating instead.

Default Neat, neat, neat! Yes, it is perfect. The engine does start to sing

around 5k and up. I think I have a similar issue with Lynda and the 2.7T. Amulet red - beautiful if I can see a picture. Congratulations again!

Default You Can Get the Cargo Liner From AudiUSA

About three colors are listed. Congrats, Finman, awesome car.

I might take some pearl white pics and try to e-mail them to you for posting. There's little time generally.
