Default Replacing brake pads is way cheaper, than rebuilding engine.

On top of it the ABS is specially designed to stop your car. It means, that it waches each wheel for locking.

On the other side Quattro designed to distribute torque between your wheels during acceleration. To prevent wheels from spining. It does not help match during braking. I mean it is the best AWD, you can get, but it does not do miracles.

Seems to me that ABS is a heck of a lot better than using engine compression.

Default IMHO, yes. See post above.

The manual recommends it for certain conditions, and the Tip already does it anyway by selecting lower gears for hills in some situations. I will frequently drop it down to 4th, or even 3rd, in advance on some hills where I know in those gears are most appropriate. I wonder how the sport mode on the '02's would handle this? Hmmmm, interesting!

Default IHMO

People switching to lower gear on hills because you need to push uphill. Plus you do not want to change gears often.

If you have problems with using brakes on hills, you probably constantly using them ("riding brakes"). Another thing is to upgrade brakes (cross-drilled and/or sloted rotors, better pads) and of cause change the brake fluid. It will keep you brakes from overheating.

Default Not if you want to stop ASAP

Engine braking can help save your breaks going down long hills, and it wont hurt your engine. But if you need to slow down safely nothing can compair to your ABS.

I suggest you test a car with out ABS in the wet and then try your car. You will see and appreciate the technology.
