How is this possible? ->
My friend took delivery of a brand new 2002 BMW X5 about 2 weeks ago. Over the weekend he noticed that the trip odometer actually had more miles (12 miles) than the actual odometer! Is this possible without the real odo being tampered with?

ODO'S USE 2 DIFFERENT SENDING UNITS
I READ RECENTLY IN CAR AND DRIVER THAT CARS WITH ELECTRONIC ODOMETERS USE 2 DIFFERENT SENDING UNITS, 1 FOR TRIP ODO AND 1 FOR REGULAR ODO. SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF THESE UNITS(I GUESS IT COULD BE EITHER ONE) IS HAVING TROUBLE COUNTING.

The answer is easy, for as long as I can remember BMW and Mercedes have shipped their cars with the ODO's reading less than 0000000, IE 999985 miles. They do this so that you can buy car with some transport and test drives miles without it going to 000000. The trip meter will always be set to 0, hence it is possible until you reset the trip meter that it could actually read more than the ODO.
