S6 or allroad
Thanks
I was actually going to post a poll asking if people thought the allroad or the S6 "looks" sportier. I saw the S6 at the autoshow and to be honest, thought it looked kinda plain... maybe I'm too used to my more extreme look on the allroad, but the S6 didn't distinguish itself enough from a standard A6 avant in my opinion.
I love the S6 rims and the mad 4.2 engine... but the wheel flares (although more than a standard A6) just aren't enough to make it look "bad ***" enough for me. The S6's alcantara seating option is a HUGE bonus though.
I think an S6 will run you in the high $60K range, while the allroad will run you in the mid $45K range.
If you want a manual shift, then allroad it is.
But all in all, two TOTALLY different cars. The allroad doesn't handle all that well, although it handles quite well considering it's a offroadable vehicle. I'd assume the S6 handles VERY well.
So... looks, I give to the allroad, performance, the S6. Value? allroad.
S6 lovers... please don't flame me too hard!! :-)
The handling of the S6 is substancially better than the allroad. As much as 10 miles per hours as per our local magazine standard "S" test.
The performance, unless you chip the allroad, is also very much better with the S6. As much as 2.8 seconds difference from 0-100 km/h, again according to local magazines, both cars with tiptronic.
As for looks I totally disagree with Nebuchadnezzar, but this is just an opinion.
The allroad on the other hand is available with a manual geearbox, whereas the S6 isn't, and the allroad is less expensive.
The allroad is an Audi Avant made for on road and off road, and it's very good at that. The S6 is a true sport wagon (the best wagon -period), or a sport sedan if it was available in that format in the States.
BTW, it's LOW 60's not High 60's for my S6.
If you can part with the additional 15K, get the S6. There'll be NO possibility of buyer's remorse.

The allroad is awesome for those who want a 5-7 passenger wagon-sized vehicle that handles well (compared to most other wagons and SUVs of the world), has good acceleration (compared to most other wagons and SUVs of the world), has real off-road capability, is not afraid to get dirty, has distictive (and attractive) rugged-looks, has a great multi-height suspension, is a phenomenal snow and beach machine, and has an awesome Audi luxury interior. It's out the door price with taxes is usually around $51-52k with taxes and luxury and premium packages, based on $2k off sticker.
The S6 Avant has exactly the same space inside and is for someone who wants the most powerful, best handling, best accelerating wagon in the U.S. It's handling and acceleration could only be unfairly compared to the allroad. The allroad has 100-200 more pounds, 90 less horsepower, different gear ratios, a much softer suspension, and less aggressive tires. The S6's snow prowess will be limited if snow depth is great. I will not take it on a beach or offroad in any way, but it will be awesome in otherwise foul weather. The S6's interior is incrementally nicer than the allroad...that alcantara goes a long way and it has the few extra luxury niceties that the 4.2 has. Depending on the color choices the S6 can be quite subtle appearing, although it does have the 4.2-esque muscular fender flares which are similar, but plasticized in the allroad, and the flares definitely give it a more aggressive look than the standard Avant. The out-the-door price for my S6, including approximately $1500 in discounts and including all taxes (luxury ~$600, gas-guzzler $2100, and 7.38% sales tax ~$4500) was approximately $67k.
It all depends on priorities...the allroad is awesome, IMO and part of me really wishes I had one (the part of me that likes to muck it up!), the S6 Avant is simply, as Andre put it, the best wagon period (of course, that is if that is the kind of wagon you want...ridiculously fast and powerful with phenomenal handling!) All at a mere $15-17k premium
