Default No ABS in reverse?

It was icy this morning in the DC area, and my driveway is a short, steep slope. While backing, my wheels were locking up with no ABS effect. Is that normal?

on ice i have found that even if the ABS is working you are going to slide. seems that ice is very slippery and your tires have no grip.

Default Re: Some ABS systems are programmed not to function below a certain MPH. Kind of makes sense in...

some very slow, low-grip situations. In your situation, if the brakes had pulsed, what would the benefit be? The car would still be moving, and maybe not in the direction you want! Don't you guys use sand or salt for really bad driveways? I get very little ABS experience on the street in Dallas, so I am curious.
ABS does not always prevent a slide. At a road course, you can still over-steer or under-steer while using ABS.

Default Sensor uses Hall effect

Read the article at this link. The A6 ABS pre-dated they bi-directional sensor. Reading between the lines, it would seem ABS works only when going forward, unless Audi has updated the system to the new sensors ( not likely until new model ).<ul><li><a href="http://www.sae.org/automag/prodbriefs_07-00/02.htm">http://www.sae.org/automag/prodbriefs_07-00/02.htm</a</li></ul>

i just checked on my way back from lunch. they work in reverse. tested on a snow covered driveway.

as far as on ice they don't work because there is nothing for the tires to grip. you can even start a small fish tail with A6Q on snow and ice. it cathes it self very quickly. but you can do it.

as far as sand salt etc. we only use that when there is a lot of snow and ice. i don't do anything until the snow gets in my shoes. but then that is just me.

Default it has ABS in reverse, however, initial ABS reset btw 3-5 mph

When you first start your A6, ABS will self diagnose all reference sensors in each wheel before becoming active. The trigger wheel in each hubs have sloted teeths which a magnetic sensor passes over. The signal is the same both in forward and reverse motion.

Yes, we use salt/sand, but in a cold rain, I prefer to just slide to the office ASAP.
