Default What would you do with an employee who did this to your Audi..........->

I looked out my 5th story office building at 5:15pm today and noticed one of my employees sitting on the rear bumper trying to make the alarm go off.

Of course by the time I was able to get to my car, she had left. She was only trying to be funny and not do damage. She happens to be my best and most valuable employee. 28 years old if that matters. She knows I love my car.

I was very upset by this b/c I LOVE my car. I felt alot of anger towards her.

In discussing all this with my wife and son, they both agreed I should have a staff meeting and discuss that I saw and know someone was messing with my car and that I was disappointed by their lack of professionalism and disrespect to my personal property, whether it is my Audi or any piece of office equipment. And that I expect it will never happen again.

End of discussion, walk out of staff room and carry on the day.

What is everyone's opinion? That car is Black and of course I had to wash the dirt off to see the damage(scratches). Of course these scratches will buff out by myself.

Thanks everyone. Disappointed in my employee

Default I vote no on the staff meeting...

Keep it between the two of you, keep it positive and constructive, and keep it out of the office. I'm as fanatical about my car as you are, but many people do not understand the fanaticism. Tell your employee that you understand that she was trying to play a prank on you, but unfortunately, the car is off limits.

If you take it to everyone, you're likely to draw criticism and potentially more pranks on your car.

Default well, you could...

...pay to have the scratches buffed out professionally and then take it out of her next check.

Personally, I wouldn't bring it up at a staff meeting. Maybe in a one-on-one meeting with her, but I don't think it's necessary or appropriate to bring anyone else into it.

Funny story though....if it was me, I'd probably hire a tow truck and have her car towed the next day as a 'joke'. ;-)

Default I'd call her outside and show her the scratches she left, (if any)

then let her know this is NOT at all funny. Then step back and wait for her to p*ss herself.

Default I don't think a staff meeting is appropriate......

The same sort of thing happened to me, where one of my employees would park too close to my car (over the white lines partly in my spot) everyday. I just spoke to him and told him that I would appreciate if he not park so close and park between the lines. He apologized and I haven't had a problem since. If you know who the person is I would just talk to her one-on-one and tell her what you saw and that you would appreciate if she not do that again. Unless she is trying to do something to spite you, she should get the message. And I am sure that she will let everyone know what happened, so a staff meeting is not necessary.

Default If this was Singapore, a good caning would be called for but ...

since good employees are still hard to find I will bow to your family's advice but with the suggestion that you possibly confront her in your office, privately, and speak frankly regarding the disrespect shown to your personal property. Unless there are other issues of office equipment usage that need to be addressed then a group staff meeting would be in order. Good luck. After working for a large bank in management, I hope this doesn't go to an HR person whose "PC". There, your guilty until proven innocent.

Default Take her to lunch...

Wait a few days to cool down! Take her to lunch, and talk to her about how you feel about her action, like friends. Her action, as you said it, was a friendly thing... supposed to be funny, so the staff meeting would be wrong, because that brings it back to a business level. and even if you didn't call her out, she would feel like you are making her look bad in front of peers. Don't do it.

She only meant for it to be a freindly thing. Don't forget... So treat it like at friendship level... and don't let a few minors scratches get in your relationship.

Address her individually, show her the scratches though they are minor, and it wasn't appreciated..

Default I agree, one on one and low key...

This is a teaching/mentoring opportunity with your employee. Teach her to think about boundaries without attacking her. Remember, she's valuable.

Default What are you, a wimp?

No staff meeting, bring her in YOUR office and discuss it with her... This is between you an dher. Believe me, the word will get out that you do not appreciate that kind of stuff... No big meeting necessary unless you need compassion from the group
