This guy has a funny take on oil changes
from bimmer.org, see if you see yourself in here somewhere:
OIL CHANGES
Oil/Filter 15,000 miles (don't care, leasing, planning to sell early)
Oil 15,000 miles / Filter 7,500 miles (care, but not that much. Just changing a filter is easier than the tools and hassle for a full oil change)
Oil/Filter 7,500 miles (You care, you enjoy the car, grease is the word)
Oil/Filter 5,000 miles (They're going to bury you in this car)
Oil/Filter 3,000 miles (What else ya gonna do on a Friday night after 5 coats of Zaino? Only Red Line for this baby)

Oil/Filter 19,000 miles - Audi Variable Service!
Despite the variable service being dependant upon driving style and my driving style being described as "agressive", I'm still on track for around 18.5k / 19k between services.
No problems with oil loss & it doesn't seem thick or "gooey" on the dip-stick, so I guess the stuff works. It's darned dear though - £12 a litre if I remember rightly. Of course you can only buy it through Audi dealers!

Mobil 1 Synthetic is now branded with the appropriate VW rating for variable servicing and I believe that Esso also sell a suitable oil. Unfortunatley Dial Leasing refuses to pay the cost of approved fully synthetic oil so I get Mobil 1 semi-synthetic and fixed 9000 mile service intervals

Thanks for the info John, can price Mobil up & negotiate with dealer in future!
FWIW, the oil Audi dealers use is Castrol SLX Long Life and it comes in an Audi badged container. That's probably why it's so expensive! ;-)
