wanted: 3rd seat for avant
pretty wierd.
As mentioned by CWK, initially the third seat was an after market fitment. Later it was available only as a factory installed option. My guess is that there may have been some cases where the owner/dealer misinstalled the seat and some untoward events unfolded. Not wanting litigation as in the famous "unintended acceleration" case in the US, Audi decided to supply them only as factory fitted items. This is my guess.
I nearly bought an A6 avant and wanted the third seat badly because I have two small children. After checking it out on another avant, I decided not to buy. It was tremendously clumsy and needed the salesperson and myself to unfold and fold it. It was not designed to be removed easily to make space in the back. It folded to the left and took up a great deal of cargo space. The Volvo S80 (I think) has a very easy system to use but the car didn't measure up to an Audi. Also, my wife pointed out that in a rear end collision, the kids would be in the rear crumple zone (I am not so sure) and be sitting on top of the gas tank. This to me was really scary. So we gave up.
As far as design I agree totally, the older design of the 92-98 wagons worked better but I heard that the rear passengers legs are in the crumple zone. Unfortunately, the seat now sits on the floor and I can only get younger/smaller kids back there. So much for progress ;(
maybe I can put a sunroof back there.
given this is the only choice for backseat options. i am pleased - however my 8 year old is s.o.l. unless she scrunches down. my niece and nephew love it, though who are 5 and 6 ears old and have 6-8 inches my daugther has 1-2 inches.
as far as the installation of the seat it took me 20 minutes to install since i had to take off the luggage cover and dog partition. it is a little clumsy and frustrating. but once it was installed it was a snap.
1. just make sure that the red levers are twisted in order to make the seat pivot forward.
2. another point of confusion is tilting the seat back - which is found on the folding feet that bolt to the 2 horizontal posts. the same locks that you use to lock down the feet also are used to unlock the seat back.
3. last item is to attach the seat belts into seat back and attaching a safety strap.
4. today for work i pivoted the seat for the alternate position. this took me 5 minutes to do. the only ackward thing is to reach around and disconnect the safety belt. disconnecting the right post was not a problem but had to muscle the sliding connector to seat the post into the alternate hole located under the plastic tab in the front left.
those are my remarks.
thanks for your input on this subject.
