Default My first accident - watch out with snow tires!!!!

Rear ended a small 4wd pick at about 3-5 MPH the other day!
Not watching the road ahead over a hill, about one mile from home, distracted by dogs playing in field! Took out the grill, headlights, hood, radiator...what a mess!

I think I would have stopped OK with the regular tires. The snows seemed very slow. This was on a dry road!

Default What kind of snows? Dry road traction is terrible unless you get...

a performance winter tire (and there are several good ones) rather than a regular snow tire. I have the Michelin pilot Alpin and feel confident in saying that this tire's dry road ability is WAAAAY better than the crappy all season touring Conti that came on the car. Of course, a performance snow will not be quite as good as a regular snow tire in the ice and snow. Compromises, comprimises.

Default Sorry to hear.

Confirms my information: That snows don't offer the traction on dry pavement that summer, or even AS tires do.

Default Makes you wonder...

If you have snow on the ground less than 10 days a season, are you really safer having snows mounted?

Default I never thought of it thay way. Hmmmm.....

I'll have to say that my Hakka 1's are pretty good in the dry considering. I've had them for two winters and can't say that they've let me down in the dry.

Default Sorry to hear! Sand/gravel?

Had similar incident once with very low speed, but sand/gravel in the road (from snow few days previous) meant low traction surface Tires (all seasons) performed as expected, but no traction is no traction.

Just curious what the road surface was like, around here it can be MORE dangerous the day after a snow melt....

Default I personally think the snows are needless on quattro...

Few people have put quattro through the kind of snow I have, and I've never had snow tires. Last year, I was running on 1/4 tread Continentals, and had no problems at all... this year with all-season performance Dunlops, it's an even better dream.

Even if you have high-performance tires for the summer, and want a winter set, just get SP Sport 5000s... you're not going to run out of traction on the roads, with those and quattro... and they'll perform 5x better than snow tires.
