Default Of course it would. It is a newer platform. The 1995 S6 was surpassed by the...

B5 S4, which was surpassed by the 2002 S6, and so on. Just wait for the new S6, V10 etc....The 6 increment will always be a bit smaller, due to weight etc, but as we know, it is nice to have a back seat and shoulder room!

Default I get your point; overweight sports cars were never popular

Don't understand the logic behind Audi. A4 is only a few hundred pound less than A6 but quite a lot smaller. Anyways, now how does S4 going to compete with BMW??? I am always in favor of more power, but a V8??? Audi should keep the car light, but I guess that is impossible since the A4 is heavy to begin with

I realize this, I was just pointing out that it is about more than weight.

Default The engine is not making it heavy...it's no heavier than the prior 2.7T...

Clearly the quattro system is adding ~200 pounds...but much of the rest of it, IMO, is found in the heavy and high-quality materials Audi uses and the luxury amenities. I have no doubt that significant weight could be removed if they cut some of the things like power Audi sport seats and replaced them with lightweight, manual, Recaros or similar...also seat heaters, mirror and window motors, the heavy dense plastic used in the dash, the sunroof, etc. etc. Just look at how thick and heavy the door hinges are in an Audi! Very thick and heavy...if that type of engineering goes into hundreds of pieces, not just a few, the pounds really add up.

Lots of stuff goes into the heavy S4...the engine is only a minor contributor...at least it's aluminum.

Default Yeah, it would be sick if they sold the S4 and the S4 light (better name though : ) ).

Have manual Recaros, no side airbags, etc. etc.

Default Like the Integra Type R...without A/C, sound-proofing, etc...

shaved a few hundred pounds off...Audi could do similar...although "no A/C" is a no way in hell!

Default Precisely. Look at the new M3 CSL for example...

Less sound deadening, lighter seats, carbon fiber parts all over the car including the seats, lightweight wheels and brakes, thinner rear glass and honeycomb structures for the floorpan. A bunch of other stuff that wasn't cheap too. They removed a total of 440 lbs.

Try lifting one of our power seats, they're fricken heavy.

Default Not a chance...

... some stats from Audi AG (posted on the new AudiWorld article) are instructive:

1) The new manual transmission S4 Avant weighs 3789 lbs vs. 4024 for the A/T S6 Avant.

2) The final drive is 3.889/1 S4 vs 2.727/1 S6

3) The O-100km/hr noted is 5.8 S4 vs. 6.5 S6 (N.B. The link below quotes 5.7 seconds for the Euro manual S6). Between weight and gearing, the S4 is back out ahead at 200 km/hr (according to kak) but just barely (S6 is 21.7 sec.).

4) The city fuel consumption is 19.6 l/100 km (11 mpg) vs 17.2 l/100 km (14 mpg) for the A/T S6 Avant. The fuel tank size is 66 litres (17.1 US gallons) S4 vs 84 litres (21.7 gallons) S6.

So, unless the S4 has some dynamic magic under its skirts that they aren't mentioning yet, I'm not going to be 'smoked' by any new S4, and I can still carry my kids, pets, and luggage along for the ride!

https://www.audiworld.com/model/s6.html</a
