2004 Audi S4 to pack sizeable performance punch with 4.2-liter V8
Audi's new S4 will pack a sizeable performance punch when launched in the United States next fall as a 2004 model.
The S4's new powerplant is a version of Ingolstat's 4.2-liter V8, producing 344 hp at 7000 rpm and 296 lb-ft of torque between 3000 and 4500 rpm. The power flows to all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or an optional seven-speed Tiptronic automatic.
Audi's S4 move is the first step in a plan to provide all of its future S models with non-turbo engines, according to insiders. To that end, the next S6 gets an all-new 5.0-liter V10. Topping the lineup is an S8 fitted with a 6.0-liter W12 mill, at least in Europe. U.S. officials say Audi hasn't decided whether to market a W12 S8 in the States.
Much of the S4's chassis development was carried out on the Nürburgring in a move Audi claims will see it go one better dynamically than the Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG and BMW M3.

Just a V10? No way it'll have enough HP, and the low-end torque will be just terrible.
Plus, I bet it looks ugly. I'm not buying one. No way, no how.

Bulletin! The number of cylinders in all future Audi engines will be a prime number.
To compete with Audi, the number of cylinders in future BMW engines used in the most powerful models will be twice the number of the series. For example, the most powerful engine in the new M5 will have 10cylinders. The Mini will have two cylinders.
