Default Test drive part one - 525iT vs. A6 3.0 Avant

Well, we have to go again tonight because the dealer didn't have an Avant so we had to drive a sedan, and my wife is convinced the wagon will be like driving a completely different car - whatever.

Anyway, it's too bad the Avant doesn't have a sport package - the 525iT we were in did and it felt great, and my wife loved the taut ride. She was fine with the power in the 525, but when she tried the A6 3.0 (sedan) she felt a big difference, and in fact, squealed around the first turn (I was so proud of her!). The ride in the A6 was a bit more floaty - not as sporty, but I'm not sure what was sport suspension and what was just the car itself. The interior room in the 525 SUCKS for a car that size! I'm 6'2" and put the seat almost the whole way back, and it left 4 fricking inches between the back seat and the rear of my seat!! It is nuts. Interior was actually disappointing in the Audi, but we will wait until tonight when we have a more thorough test drive to make a final determination. The fit wasn't really good in the Audi we drove, and I saw some gapping and puckering of the leather in the side panels. I think she's leaning toward the Audi, but mostly because it's not a BMW (status-mobile to her). We'll see after tonight.

Tried an X5 - she hated the SUV feel, being high off the road...

S6 and RS6 combo would have you in a demographic segment all to yourself.

Default One other thing - quattro...

My wife is now intrigued by quattro because the sales guy used the word 'safety' and 'quattro' in the same sentence. I'm working on informing her how quattro works as a safety mechanism in avoidance maneuvering and simply putting power to any wheel as needed. It doesn't rain much or snow ever here in Southern CA, so I have to appeal to the safety sense elsewhere. If you guys have anything to add, feel free...I'll pass it along

Default I know - trust me, I'd do it if I could, but...

we just bought a boo-coup house and I'm still pouring money into furnishing it, baby on the way so we have those expenses coming up, and my wife flips out at spending 40k on a car, not to even mention 65k!! The beauty and power of the S6 would largely go wasted on her, unfortunately, because she doesn't drive in such a way as to fulfill what it can do, but Lord, that would be awesome!

still wouldn't be orangemarlin, though...

Default On the test drive tonight,

have the salesperson get your wife to ( hopefully ABS, so they'll know all about this ) park the car half on the road, and half on gravel/sand/slippery stuff. She can punch it, and the car will launch straight with no drama or tugging at the steering wheel. I used to keep two fingers on the wheel just for safety, but you don't really have any tugging or lurching no matter the surface.

Default Don't forget that the advantages of Quattro...

...is that "it" works whether the road conditions are rainy, snowy, or dry. The benefits are not exclusive only to bad weather driving.

Default Good idea, April - we'll see if the salesperson is up for it - we're going to

Newport Beach Audi tonight - Commonwealth had NO Avants except for the Allroads. We're talking to Richard at NB Audi - know him perchance?

She discovered one of the benefits when she peeled out on her first corner :-)

Default How about avoiding single vehicle accidents...

Try (or not) dropping two wheels off the pavement onto a soft shoulder at speed in a Quattro vs a rwd BMW.

Default If I did'nt needed quattro (for the Québec's winter) I would probaly get BMW over audi.

Love their performance, steering feeling, engine sound, prestige but don' like space, price.
*Don't get me wrong, I would never trade my 4.2 for a 540, the 540 would drive like **** in here during winter! LOVE QUATTRO!!!
