Default Need recommendations - wife and I are deciding between two Avants

Both loaded '02's with Convenience, Premium, and Preferred Luxury packages.

First one is Alpaca Beige with tan leather, telematics, and manual side window shades. We really, really like the shades (for the baby) and the look of this car, but worry about spills, stains, and scuffs in the lighter interior, as well as color fading and appearing mismatched.

Second is silver with black leather, rear side airbags, and Bose. We like the idea of black interior because it hides dirt better, not to mention clutter, but this car doesn't have the rear side shades and instead spends 'upgrade' money on a Bose system which we don't care about. The black interior looks a little like a Passat interior to me, and we like the Alpaca beige exterior more because it is more unique.

Anyone there with a messy wife and little one have experience or advice regarding the lighter interiors?? Or should we just go for the silver/black one and forgo the sunshades, accepting the exterior and interior even though it's not first choice??

Default Get your first choice, IMO

the rear side air bags MAY be a safety issue with a baby seat (call me paranoid, OK?).

I have black with two boys (10 and 6) who are very active in sports. The black interior picks up the dust/dirt from their shoes but cleans up really easily. The only scuffs I have are on the lower rear portion on the back of the front seats from the boys swinging their feet. I've read the lighter colors wear well so I wouldn't anticipate this being a problem unless your dumping Happy Meals on the carpeting. Maybe a heavy dose of ScotchGuard on the carpets right after delivery might be "preventive medicine".

Also, the Alpaca/Tan is a very unique color combination and would stand-out a bit when compared to silver. Get your first choice!

Default I had an Melange/Melange Avant. It was perfectly color fast.

Yes the carpet got dirty but that's what floor mats are for. Watch for scuffs on the lower inside doors. I found a product on the detailing forum that was the only thing that took it off. Harly's Poly guard.(I get stuffs on the black S6 as well)

The black is hot, even here in New England! Stick with the beige

Default I don't like beige, unless you throw some really flashy wheels on it, maybe black. So I would vote

for #2.

Default these shades are built in to the door panel - very slick.

We can go with the stick-on kind, but they just aren't as cool or as convenient. Still worried about the interior of the beige/tan getting dirty/stained/scuffed more easily because my wife is not exactly the best at taking care of her car, and she doesn't tell me she spilled her Diet Pepsi until weeks later - after it has already hardened to resin in the carpet...

Default funny story (or sad) about wife and spilled drink ->

Was driving wife's car to dealership to pick up mine after a day of service. She drives a '98 Contour, with the sport engine, very peppy. Anway - I lift up the arm rest and in the middle of the CD tray which is about 4x4 wide and 6 inches deep, and there is 3 inches of soda sloshing around in the tray. I of course am absolutely floored - and ask her why she hasn't cleaned it up. She told me that she didn't know how to get the fluid out (WTF!). The thing that really blew me away, it had happened the week before. (sigh) and she wonders why I don't let her drive my car.

Default 1st choice would be my take. Shades are great with kids

They can't really move out of the sun's way when they're bolted into the seats so the shades really are useful. My wife and I think they are among the most useful of the car's upscale features.

I've had no problem with my light interior color and kids. I use a similar color towel under their seats and we simply subscribe to the water and dry snack only approach. I do maintain an "iron law" on that issue but, I think that because its all my kids know, its no big deal at all for them to stay in those limits. Its been a non issue and the Audi's silver interior as well as our other car's light tan interior are still in great shape.
