Disinfecting A/C to get rid of "basement" smell...
Greetings all!
I've searched the archives here and over at TDIClub.com to get an idea of what procedures people have used to kill the mold/mildew that seems to form on the A/C condenser. One of the more common (and easier) methods is to remove the pollen filter, turn the fan on low, spray copious amounts of Lysol in the air intake, then turn off the fan and let it sit for awhile.
A couple of questions:
1. Anyone here performed this particular method? Tips?
2. Where is the pollen filter/intake on the '00 Avant (wife's car and manual is with her)?
3. Anyone have a good alternate procedure?

Microbes will thrive in a warm, moist and dark environment. Once a mold or bacterial population is established, it can be controlled by the method you suggest, followed by running the system, to clear the passages. Several such cycles may be required over a period of a few days. Lysol is a fairly good surface disinfectant while being relatively begnign to the hardware, and would be my first choice. I would avoid any hypochlorite containing compounds i.e. chlorine bleach, while they will be more effective at low concentrations, they are much more corrosive.
Any filters that can be R & R, should be before the disinfection process.

It's made by that crazy *** German company Wurth
available at carcareonline.com. I have an unused can sitting in my garage because we were able to convince the Mercedes service dept. to do this gratis on a Starmark car. That car had never had its A/C turned off in two years, and boy was it ripe! Lysol is probably just as good, just don't plan on driving the car right away because the fumes will probably kill you. Dump it into the vents at the base of the windshield while the system is running, and then spray into the interior vents when it isn't.

Lysol doesn't last long. Try Frigi-Fresh, or these products that are designed to last...
