Default I must be dreaming. Newly installed turbos break before I get the car back.

Glad they did, but...someone pinch me!!!! They were loosing some pressure and while they were checking hoses found chucks of metal and some oil on the right side!!! So, if there was orignally a bad (real noisy) turbo, and the replacement was bad, then there's still a chance this whole mess was just a bad turbo. Can I call my A6 a 2000/2002 1/2? 'Nuff new parts! So, out comes the engine again. I think, some of these turbo replacement and orignal failures are due to lack of immediate oil after it's been drained and refilled. Air vs. oil is there for a few moments, long enough to at least score the bearing or worse. My orignal turbo whine started just after I left dealer after 5000 mile oil change and I've heard other who have had that happen. Also, there's been a few replacements failing during drive home from dealer.

Please someone wake me up!

Default Confirms my fear on major dealer repairs. >>>

With the engineering tolerances and complexity of cars, it seems to me that nobody outside the factory is qualified to do this level of work. Audi (and others) should just offer "plug 'n' play" remanufactured engines with extended warranties. They already acknowledge that they can't fix transmissions.

This would make repairs faster and more effective (a plus for customer satisfaction). Not sure how it affects the cost to Audi.

Default what you say is great for owners with warranty cars.....

but frightening for anyone with a car out of warranty. A tranmission replacement at $10K vs.
a surgical fix. Turbos similar story, kind of absurd they way the infrastructure has been set up. Anyone know whether they have the same issues
in their German home market, or will they actually
"repair" a Tip, there? Suppose it is a good thing
that the allroad's last MY will get that V-8.

Default They must have done it, the chances of them getting bad K03s from the factory

has got to be really slim. I bet some jackass dropped something in there and blew the new turbos. Sucks man, hope everything works out.

Default Surgical fixes are cheaper if they work. Component swapping...

... would cost a ton, but then you would have a more highly-valued asset.

Default You've mentioned that before, and I'm getting a little paranoid.

Sure hate to give up what I've grown to like so much.

Default Jeez... did they flush the motor before they put it back together.

Not to mention they should have investigated the cause of the failure in the first place. Turbos are rather sturdy pieces that don't live a particularly stressfull life if all systems are stock and intact, they usually don't just blow up. Generally they blow from lack of lubrication and/or over-heating caused by a faulty system that allowed over boost, or something foreign material being introduced to the blades. Until you determine cause, slapping new turbos on could become a regular event with your car. Sounds like you need an "experienced" mechanic.
