Default Update.. New turbos 2001 2.7T

Been driving the car for 4 days now. Trying to be as gentle as possible (enormous effort required!!).

The low speed ooomph has returned (and so has the grin!). Besides the hesitation and first to second gear issue, the power comes on very nicely from around 1700/1800. Power remains consistent after repeated bursts of acceleration (engine warmed up). Before, there was intermittent power loss during normal driving and fairly pronounced lack of low end power.

HOWEVER, (the dreaded "however") this morning, as I took a left turn and accelerated, I heard the dentist drill sound again for a short moment. The revs had dropped to about 1500, I was in D mode, and the car was in first gear. I accelerated normally (not pedal to the metal or aggressive) and at about 2200/2300 I heard it!! But the transmission shifted to second at about the same time (felt the hesitation).

I replicated it a couple of times. Will try to determine the parameters required to produce noise this during the weekend. I could not distinguish this sound from the turbo whine/whoosh at higher revs/different gears because of the general wind noise (windows open) and other road noises. (Yes, I can hear the turbos whine/whoosh clearly with windows down but the sound is not very intrusive. I am probably hyperconscious right now. Anyway, when the car was new and up to about 5000 miles, we never heard ANY turbo noise.)

I believe this noise could be the TBV since it is apparent at gear change. I have read about TBV noises upon deceleration. I will do a more thorough search of the forum later. Anyone more technically savvy care to comment? I have the latest TT TBVs installed. TIA.

Default Dentist drill sound on our A4: the A/C. Clutch releases when you punch it, kicks back in after...

and it can make this noise as it grips again.
To test if this is the case for you, simply turn your A/C off or set it to econ. Then try again.

Our technician, the foreman of the shop at Anderson-Behel, said it was not worth the money to replace it alone (out of warranty), but it could be replaced next time the bumper was off. If you are in warranty, there should be no problem to get it fixed right away.

Default Thanks. Will try it asap. Noticed most today in 2nd gear acceleration. Car has to be below 10mph ...

When you accelerate, you can hear the sound from around 2200 to 4500 (that's when I stopped accelerating - moderate load). I have been switching the a/c on and off so that I could hear the sound better but I will try it more scientifically.

More later. thanks.

Checked it. Noise is there without a/c too. But it is intermittent. Could it be BPVs?
