I autocrossed the S6...!!!
I just had to go for one run today at the NY BMWCCA autocross, after securing first place with the MCoupe I had to use my last run to try out "Big Bertha" between the cones. I actually went pretty good, faster than maybe half or more of the competitors ( waiting for times to be posted) and just over 4 seconds from my own MCoupe time over a 1 minute course. Not too shabby especially considering the seats are so slippery that I thought I was going to fly out the window and the tires are not even scuffed from the first 400 miles! I tried all I could to get the car in a drift but there's no unsticking that car (save for heavy understeer if you go in too hot) Fun!

Well there's more to it than that....
.... Driver skill and experience is a big factor in autocross, so it's not necessarily a great comparison. I got a better time than a Ferrari F40 but that doesn't mean The S6 is faster (...clearly) just that that driver was...errr, "unsure"? the S6 was certainly the BIGGEST car there, there was one other wagon, a BMW 3 series. But most of the cars there were from "sporty" to very fast. Hopefully the full results will be posted online soon so I can compare. But, damn those Contis scream when pushed!

Yes of course, I was assuming against similarly driven cars. For example..
Given yourself as a constant as the driver, what type of cars, if driven by you( or someone you consider a peer in skills) might have turned a time 4 seconds slower than your coupe? Just a curiousity. I know its very tough to take the driver out of the equation.

Hmm, that's a tough one as the better drivers show up prepared...as it were....also this time there were the usual amount of M3s and assorted 3 series of various vintages but not any modern 5 series. I really need to see the times but I know I went faster than a fellow who regularly runs a 635... he's been at autocrossing longer than I. Anyway, with a little practice it's possible you could get the S6 though on par with a 540 automatic or a big Merc. The biggest handicap is the tiptronic which won't really hold in gear and the seats which just leave you no leverage at all (what happened to the Recaro's in the translation?) The light steering is also a minus as most of the time you are below the speed threshold for stiffer effort. But in the end I myself was quite surprised that I was through the course without hitting any cones which speaks well of the manuverability of the car.....If only it had been raining I could have tried a Tiff Needell move!
