Default The questions of a Novice

Greetings all,

I've enjoyed reading these forums for many hours during the last few days in anticipation of the delivery of my 02 A6 4.2.

I currently drive a Volvo, which has its own devoted following, but for different reasons.

Volvo has innumerable OEM and aftermarket dealers who sell things like snow and mud floor mats (with 1" lips to prevent spilling, etc), and trunk mats, and all of the sundry crap that one wishes they'd ordered and installed before the disaster... What/who does Audi have in a similar vein?

How long and for how many miles is the "break-in" period?

Does the A6 4.2 have a "sport mode" (can't remember)? And with which package does one get the automatic rear sunshade/manual side sunshades?

Do you A6 owners with Tip use the Tip? And does it provide a "real" performance difference? (or is it a "fun" gimmick?). I didn't have a chance to use the tiptronic function during my test drive, Honolulu traffic being what it is...

Forgive the naivete, when I decided on the A6 I didn't realize that the support network included a Forum of informed owners/drivers/fanatics.

Best regards,

--BEAU

Default A few answers for the novice...

First of all...congrats on your advancement to a 4.2...

1. Trunk and floor mats can be purchased either from the dealer or from on-line Audi parts suppliers...the most frequently used here is clairparts.com. There are a variety of trunk mats available...either plastic, foam, or carpeted rubber...I'd recommend either the foam or carpeted rubber...the plastic ones (made by weathertech, look like crap...but are more durable...although I have had the foam one for almost 2 years and it has functioned very well and looks good too.) Heavy rubber floor mats are available and fit perfectly.
2. 1000 miles...avoid constant engine speed, high speed (>100-110 mph), and "flooring" it
3. Yes, all '02s and '03s have a sport mode (transmission), there is also a sport package available which is the sport suspension and seats. The shades, I believe are part of the hot weather package.
4. I almost never use the tip...but it is semi-useful for spirited twisties...it is helpful in executing a more definite and quick downshift...not as quick as a stick...but more quickly and more certain to shift than just by stabbing the throttle.

Enjoy the 4.2, it is awesome.

Default Tip also useful during engine warm-up...

because the ECM is set to hold gears longer when cold to get the catalytic converter up to temp faster, as a fuel economy measure. Not liking this (I kicking Audi), I manually upshift during the first five minutes of driving.

Default Fin: Which "heavy rubber floormats" fit the 4.2 perfectly?

I thought all the "factory" aftermarket offerings specifically excluded 4.2 (because of the model's different transmission housing--"hump"--configuration, I assumed).

Oh, and lookee here...you can now get the "trunk" (I assume this means "or cargo area" mat with S6 logo!<ul><li><a href="http://collection.audiusa.com/store/accessory.asp?parent%5Fcategory%5Fid=11&amp;catego ry%5Fid=49&amp;subcategory%5Fid=200&amp;product%5F id=1521&amp;featured=1">A6/S6 "Trunk Mat"</a></li></ul>

Default Yeah, I don't like that one...too plasticky...

<center><img src="http://collection.audiusa.com/audi_assets/images/product/1521.jpg"></center><p>The "perfect" fit I was referring to was the heavy rubber floor mats for the seating area...they are available at clairparts...they cost more than the other A6 mats.

The trunkmat I've got is the "allroad" carpeted mat (although you already know that), which I think is the best looking and yet is still waterproof...the foam mat is waterproof but not very durable.
The plastic one shown in the pic is nice and durable looking...like the weathertech...but it is not good looking in any way. The carpeted, rubber backed mat is the best compromise, IMO.
