Default LATCH system for child carseats

(I posted this under a different thread last week but didn't get a response, so thought I'd try it as a main thread.)

I recently had the retrofit kit for the LATCH system installed in my 2001 A6. I'm curious about why there are no anchors in the middle (rear) seat position? There is a tether-hook on top in the middle. I always thought the middle-back was supposedly the most desireable location for carseats. (I don't have any children, so this is just a curiousity point.) Any ideas? Are you supposed to be able to use the two inner anchors from the left and right outside positions?

Default I have my child seat in the center..........>>

With just the rear tether-hook and the seatbelt. That seat is going no place if I ever get in an accident. I find no need for any additional mounting.

Plus, I can take the child seat out or put it back when when i need the rear seat in about 2 minutes.

BTW, 2 mid sized adults can still sit in the back seat one on each side of the car seat and still be comfortable.

Default found some info ->

From <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/08/28/child.seats.ap/">CNN article</a>:

"Also, automakers are required to put the anchors only at the two outboard seats; many parents prefer to put their children in the middle of the back seat to avoid injuries in side impact accidents."

I also came across this phone number for Audi: (800) 822-2834

Perhaps you can call them and ask if they can offer the anchors for the center seat.

Default Re: LATCH system for child carseats

With the LATCH system, you can probably get away with using the inner pair of anchors. But it will end up blocking the left and right passenger seatbelt buckles.
As for the reason why there's no center LATCH. My guess is that since the LATCH system is based on ISOFIX which attaches the carseat through two rails. The different shape of rear center seats probably prevent them from complying with all ISOFIX seats. (Unless all center seat becomes flat. )

Default may not be safe in center

Many manufacturers use separate bars with the latch hooks on the right and left sides. These bars are designed for crash forces on both sides of the bar at once, and may not be able to handle being attached on only one side, as they would be if you used them for the center seat position. I do not know if Audi does this, but it is probably worth checking into. FWIW, I use latch seats on both sides.

FWIW- Audi does not build it's chassis with the threaded inserts for center LATCH.
