Default Bought used 99 Avant, Why do I need a warranty?

I noticed you all recommend extended warranties. Why? they are $1300 - $2500! Are the odds that stacked against me on a 99 A6 Avant with 72000 miles?

Thanks,

Claire

What motor? 2.8 or 4.2? If you aren't handy, I would recommend one...

Default It's not an Audi thing

it's a modern day used car thing.

Get some ballpark estimates from your service dept. for stuff like sunroof repair/replacment, working on the HVAC system, new tranny or radiator. Even simple-sounding stuff like a broken power seat or dying radio. You might just be amazed how fast it adds up to much more than $1500.

Alternatively, you could put away money in a special money market repair fund for the same purpose. At today's interest rates, it's hardly worth the effort.

Default My GF said the same thing, shortly after she did get one they covered over 1800 in costs...

Well worth the money IF you are going to hang onto it & are not a mechanical wiz... and few of us are with these cars...

The oil seals along are worth it... along with te Airbaglights, and the sunroof, and the......

Thet are great scooters tho' !

regards,

You have purchased a highly complex piece of machinery which is not the cheapest car to get fixed. As with any insurance decision the prime question is "can I afford to pay for a loss verses the risk that the loss will occur." Any major failure....engine, transmission, etc; will cost a lot more than the cost of the warranty. I would go ahead and get one based on the miles alone. You will sleep better. My $.02. Welcome and best of luck. B')

Default It is SO an Audi thing

My 98 GS400, 2 1/2 years later and nearly 90K miles, has not had a SINGLE repair done under the Lexus Certified warranty.

My wife's 98 A6 2.8, 1 year later with only 42K miles, has already had $4,800 dollars worth of repairs, and the climate control system is still F'd up.

We have been so disappointed with this car that we will be selling it when the warranty expires. The warranty companies must know a thing or two, they want to charge $2300 for the same warranty that would be $850 on the Lexus (assuming same year / mileage) To me, it certain does look like an Audi thing.

It's a non-Japanese thing.

Default Let's just say it a German thing

I honestly have had much better luck reliability wise with my American cars then with this car.

My perfect car would be a car engineered by the Germans, but built by the Japanese (using Japanese engines and electronics).
