My 2002 tiptronic, non-quattro 3.0 A6 loaner has 6 speeds.

According to all of the literature it's only suppose to have 5. Can somebody clue me in?

Must have the CVT.

The continuously variable transmission has 6 artificial "soft" gears that are coded into the tranny programming. Not sure why... maybe for those who enjoy the rise and fall of the rpms and exhaust sound? Leaving it in "D" is more efficient though.

The VIN is 2002 and according to Edmunds there wasn't a CVT until 2003

You can shift into a 6th gear or do the revs change 6 times? Maybe one is torque converter lock-up?

I own a 2002 3.0 CVT in addition to my S6, very impressed by 3.0 vs prior 2.8Q.

Uhhhh 5 plus reverse?????

Otherwise it's a CVT.....

Thanks for all the help. I guess it's a CVT. It's pretty damn quick.

I remember test driving a tiptronic A4 3.0Q and thinking this car isn't that exciting. I'm shopping for a new car, so I guess I'm going to have to get a V8 if I still want quattro and some form of auto-shifting.
