Default S6 owners...With the Volvo V70R on the horizon what are your thoughts?

Besides that the obvious down sides to the Swede Speed Machine, do you see this machine as a real competitor?

I am not an S6 owner, but I was going to buy the V70R. It is one awesome looking car and has a ton of goodies. I couldn't wait for a June delivery date though. I bought the A6 sedan instead, but loving every minute of it.

Default I am going to look at it; but I have not kept abreast of how much damage Ford has done to V.

so there would be much research to be done before I would actually buy.

Default If it's similar to the damage Ford's done to Jaguar, then I'd consider it a plus.

I think Ford has done a nice job flattening out the reliability problems (and associated image problem) with Jaguar. Maybe Jag has lost some of its "uniqueness" in styling, but that is not as much of a problem with Volvo (having never had styling).

As an Audi owner, I am obviously willing to concede a lot in reliability; IMO Ford ruined Jag.

Default Probably not a direct S6 competitor.

The car has definitely piqued my interest. I am actually scheduled for a professional closed course introduction to the car this Sunday. I will let you know more then.

Do to the size of the car, much narrower and shorter than the S6, and in a completely different price range, I feel it is more of a direct competitor to the new S4. Especially, since an automatic AND a 6-speed manual are offered.

It will be interesting to see the performance numbers of the car, since it will definitely be much less expensive and slightly larger than the S4. I am actually considering the car over the S4, since at this time the cost of the S4 is more than I care to spend.

My $0.2.

Chris

Default Re: Ford's effects on Volvo is why I bought an Audi!

I had a 2000 Volvo XC which I just loved. As our lease was coming to an end, I was originally excited about the newly styled XC: then I drove one. Yuck! What the f*%($ did they do to the handling, power, and quality internal fit and finish? I've rented the newer XC on several ocassions and every time I get the impression that I'm driving a Taurus (no offense to Taurus owners...I'm sure it's a fine car, reliable). I love the look of it, but it doesn't 'feel' right.

Now the V70R did raise my eyebrows...thought it might be a good car for the wife (alas, she wants a Honda Element!). The press seems to indicate that they tried to tune the suspension and steering. They definitely addressed the power, right? The internal controls still look like cheap plastic though; as compared with Audi's elegant plastic. Well, you know what I mean. An Audi's interior, plastic and all, feels and looks like a well-designed, well-built cockpit.

Goes without saying that I haven't regretted going with the S6 in the meantime. My financial planner regrets it, but it is such a pleasure to drive.

Default my $0.02

I am a 2.7t owner, ex S4 Avant owner.. not willing to spend way too much for an S6, AND give up a turbo motor.. I am signed up for one of Volvo's drive events to try out the R, as it the right size, riht performance, and right price. Much as I love to visit the service dept at my local Audi dealer... How bad can regular trips to the Ford, er Volvo dealer be?

Default No! let me count the reasons...

Volvo interior
Volvo exterior styling
5 cylinder
Turbo

It might be slightly quicker, but I know that the power delivery won't be as smooth as the S.....

Default 5 cylinder turbo was a mainstay for Audi for MANY years.

Some of the hottest Audis had the 2.3L turbo motor, and it was used well into the 1990s. Having had a non-turbo 5-cyl, I can attest that it has a MUCH nicer sound than an 6 cylinder out there.
