Default Recently spoke with Jeff Ford (Len Hunt's right hand man)

Had a chance to pick his brain...

Some of this stuff you may know, some you may not.

1. 2.7T is going away with the last of the "old" body A6's.
2. The NEW A6 will be out in November of 2004.
3. The 3.0 engine is going away with the new A6 too
4. The new A6 will have a 3.2 that is DIFFERENT than the 3.2 in the TT.
5. All turbo engines will be going away. Supposedly due to emissions.
6. The new A8 will get the option of rear screens for a DVD player in a few years (sounds odd)

Overall a very nice guy!!!

Turbos are going away because Audi took a bath on the 2.7T. =)

Default ...and that's what's really sad, because the turbocharged smaller engine does use less gas...

...but CO2 emissions are not very important to reduce compared to the government's regulations wanting to eliminate the other emissions.

Default What about the 4.2L V8?

I sure as hell hope that this gem of an engine will remain available on the new A6.

Default Yeah but Audi dropped the I5 20vT for emissions reasons, too...

When OBD II came around they didn't make it compatible, so '95 was the last year in the US.

Then the 1.8T comes along...

Then the 2.7TT comes along...

Then the 4.2TT comes along...

They can meet the standards if they want to.

Default Word has it that Audi has started a new trend for their RS cars

That new trend is that the RS cars will no longer be measly "end of life kickers". Instead, the RS cars will come out one year after comparable S cars and three years after comparable "regular" A cars. The B6 RS4 coming out for MY 2005 is an obvious indication of this. The Automotive press also indicates this. WasabiAudi2's insider says otherwise. Whoever WasabiAudi2's insider is, he (or she) is most likely incorrect.

Default You're right, Audi can meet all of our emissions standards if they want to for any of their engines

This is why Audi will continue to use twin turbos in the engines of all of their RS cars (including the new Lambourghini Gallardo based RSR). I have tons of faith in both Audi and Quattro Gmbh in that they will definitely find a way to use twin turbos for their RS cars while meeting all of our emissions standards. And achieve ULEV certification. All of this without any decrease whatsoever in horsepower and torque. Direct fuel injection will play the largest role in this. A "fly by wire throttle system" similar to Mercedes' and Maybach's twin turbo 5.5L V12 will also play a role. So will the use of timing chains and numerous other revisions made to the RS cars' engines and (less restrictive) exhaust systems for more compact size, lighter weight and better space efficiency. All of the direct fuel injection + US fuel = bad engines talk is bull****. The 760Li's all new 6L V12 with direct fuel injection is pure proof of this.
