Default Clear Turn Signal Question ->

I know this has been covered in the FAQ section but I was wondering if it is possible to remove the headlight of a 2000 model A6 without taking off the entire front bumper? I want to do the modification but I have had enough issues with my bumper.

BTW, I am taking it to the dealer this weekend for the service recall. Wish me luck, I am going to beg and plead for a new bumper. Any advice on that topic would be helpful as well.

I've read earlier you can do it without it, but it helps if you drop it a little.

Default halogen lights, yes, xenon lights, no...

the xenons require the bumper to be removed.

Default Re: Clear Turn Signal Question ->

I just did an OEM Xenon conversion on my "00 last week. Defintitely, if you have Xenon housings, you need to either lower the bumper a couple inches, or remove it altogether. The ballasts are strapped to the very bottom of the housings with a metal strap. Not lowering/removing the bumper will result in some serious scratches on the bumper. Halogen housings, however, should clear with no problem. Your biggest problem will be trying to reposition the third mounting screw, that is accessable from an access hole on the edge of each fender well.

Default I was able to do it with the Xenons (take it out without removing the bumper)...

I'll never do it that way again though. Just take off the bumper. It takes 15 minutes to get off including putting it up on jackstands. Although you could probably just put it up on one side with a good hydraulic. Although, I never like to get under the car without a stand.

Default Hmmm I took out the two at the top, the one at the bottom ...

I am not certain where this one at the side is. I did not see anything by the radiator. That bottom screw was a REAL trick to get out with that little T30 bit. Is this phantom 4th screw like the others? Just as long? I can not see it for the life of me but that is indeed where my hangup is. FYI, I have a 1998 sedan. Once all 4 screws were out, how easy was it to get out? Everyone says everything is "not too hard" to get out but I often times find myself with a sledge (once) in hand to get off rusted partshe grain of salt bit was funny because salt was likely the reason for my rust problem. Oh well, I am learning right? Right! Thanks for the help. BTW, if you could find those pics, it would be I could find anything searching the archives, just your posts saying you "had pictures".

Default I'd post pics but the digicam is broken. Yes there is a phantom 4th screw.

Basically with the hood open look at the rad. On either side of it there are these plastic covers going down the side. On each of these there is a phillips head screw driver holding the plastic flush to the rad. Take this off and pull it back and you will have access to the 4th screw.

The 4th screw holds a peg recepticle to the side of the rad. It really isn't meant to be removed as you can get the lights out with the bumper off. I had to use an L-shaped torx put to get at it (T30 IIRC - but not sure).

If you look at the headlight out of the car there are three mount points really:

1. The 2 screw tabs on top.

2. The 1 screw off the back right that you have to access through the 1/4 panel hole.

3. The peg on the back left of the housing that slides into the recepticle on the side of the radiator.

Hope that helps,
