Ok, so, as of today, I made a commuter car decision...
I'm almost certain, what I want to do, is get a 20th Anniversary Edition VW GTI in Imola Yellow. I comes with pretty nice 18 inch wheels which are from the R32, the same suspension, brakes, and Recaros as the 337, a new 6-speed transmission and it is easily chippable (with VW approval) to around 220 HP or so...all for a mere $23k or so.
It should be a fun car to zip around in...and do the daily commute for not very much money...while I wait for the new S8 or S6 or whatever...
I will wait to get it until July...during my work hiatus...get it in NY and drive to Arizona...should be pretty cool...
That said...that is what I am thinking today...I have no idea what I'll be thinking tomorrow...but this seems pretty cool...I would love to have the R32, but it looks like it will be January or so before it arrives...and really, it is gonna be pretty heavy with that AWD system and the bigger engine...I'll make due with this little piece of crap!

The NY -> AZ drive is lots of fun... just take the high road.
Take 80/90 west through PA, OH, IN, IL, IA, until you get to Nebraska, then cut down through Colorado to Santa Fe, across to Flagstaff, and down to Phoenix.
Dream trip. Lots of open road in CO, NM, and AZ. But, they do have some traps in the middle of nowhere in AZ.

Fine decision IMO. Materials, fit/finish & general build quality are all superb.
Oh yeah, the fun to drive factor is very, very high too.
It will be interesting to see what you actually end up with....July is forever away.
I'd re-eval the A/C in the Cooper S; can they really be as bad as your first impression? Does a set of clubs fit in a Mini?

Haven't driven it, but numerous reviews have mentioned a <HARD> ride...
...and even have suggested that it might be too firm for a daily driver. Car and Driver Television said just that, as a matter of fact...
A factor worth considering in a daily commuter.
The Golf, though not as "kewl", is more practical, and just as quick, plus much smoother.
YMMV.
