Default What RPM is considered lugging in a 4.2?...

I guess in other words, whats the minimum RPM the v8 wants to see?

Default I don't know...but it does seem to have an explosion point of around 2500-3000 rpm...

where it really takes off...which seems to thin out around 5000 rpm or so...

But I don't think it ever lugs...it is pretty free to rev up quickly...

Note: this is a different "explosion point" than that found in late-model M3's.

Default Yeah, the M3 "explosion" is probably a bit more "exciting"...

going down in a blaze of glory!

Default Don't know, but I tend to keep it low, probably for no good reason....

After a careful breakin period, I found that I habitually shifted below 4000. I tend to drive between 2000 and 3000. Plenty of torque most of the time.

I rarely floored it. Hell, it took me a year to find out that I had a kickdown switch, and that was only because someone here told me! Now, I'm less conservative by far.

My friend Brad encouraged me while driving his to take it to the limiter. With aftermarket exhaust, it was particularly rewarding.

Not sure what is too high or too low for routine use.

Default The only "lugging" I've ever experienced is when the tranny spasses out ...

by refusing to kick down when I'm trying to accelerate while making a turn following a stop. This has happened maybe 3 or 4 times in 18k miles and can be quickly remedied by moving into "tip" mode and manually downshifting. But its a true PIA when it happens, and can induce something of a pucker factor, particularly if you're merging into traffic.

Default If you're flooring it from a stop while turning is it possible that you're engaging the traction

control?

Nearby there's a steeply sloped 80 degree corner that I take and can get the car (with no effort at all in the wet!) to activate the traction control and it's as if someone has pulled the plug on the power...it just bogs down, stumbles, stumbles...finds traction after the turning is mostly complete and I'm off the steep part and then it picks up again.

It's a very odd feeling to floor it and have nothing happen because the car is doing its own thing.

Default Well, I don't think I'm flooring it, but I'm certainly trying to "move out..."

Wasn't on a hill, and the dashboard traction control light didn't come on. But an interesting theory.

Default Example. When in "D" at 40 mph tranny goes into 4th then 5th..

At this speed the r's pm are at like 1800 and this seems too low to cruise in and since I am breaking her in I was leery of letting it bog down there. Also, found out that in tip mode I can prevent it from shifting into 2nd by pulling back on the shifter just as I start to accelerate. This reaffirms 1st and holds it there. Thanx for the replies all..
