CEL after Unplugging Throttle Body

A question for the enlightened...

Sequence of events:

-bought 2000 A6 2.7T, six speed, 55K, runs great

-6 weeks of high performance then Check Engine Light appears

-in for service... code suggests Fuel Trim Issue

-discover crack in rubber Y boot at the inlet of the throttle body. Tech bulletin helps find problem.

-tech fixes problem. Unplugs Throttle body to do so.

-drive off lot only to have CEL return about 3 miles down the road.

-computer now throwing many codes including: cylinder misfire, idle control systems, and fuel trim... oxegen sensors say LEAN

-tech baffled... me frustrated.

Any ideas???

Bad MAF

17536 and 17538 are almost always a bad MAF.

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is the MAF?

If this is the issue, what am I looking at financially.

Mass Air Flow sensor

Mine was replaced under warranty, but I think they're ~$400! Search archives for MAF and you'll find a ton of info...

Was it an Audi tech or an independent?

An indie may not have known to rerun a throttle body adaptation with his VAG tool.... suspect you'd want/need that done after touching the tb.

Independent.

If in fact the tech failed to run the throttle body adaptation, is it still your guess that the MAF is bad?

Get the exact codes from him and we can help more : )

Fuel trim - system too lean is usually a bad MAF or a leak in the intake. I'd be speculating on the rest, so try to get the exact codes from him.
