(Over)heated steering wheel (Long)
This past fall my '99 A6 Avant with cold weather package experienced a short in the steering wheel that caused the steering wheel to melt under the leather and fill the passenger compartment with smoke. I turned off the driver's seat heater to stop the flow of electricity.
My car was out of warranty and I had my independant shop replace the wheel. I also searched the archives and found a few other A6 owners had similar problems.
In addition, I searched the NHTSA site to see if other Audi owners had reported similar problems. I went ahead and filed a complaint to build up data just in case it becomes a common occurance.
Last Friday I was contacted by the NHTSA for more info and they also requested that I send them my old steering wheel. (My mechanic was just getting ready to make it a base for a new lamp he was going to build!)

That's funny, Steve Chan handled the 993 Wiring Harness...
melitng issue. I was the lead consumer for that problem that after three years resulted in a full recall from PCNA - unheard of until then. Steve is a good guy and will follow through, just make sure you stay on top of him, he works many cases at once and the smaller ones fall through the cracks.
