Steering Rack Oil Leak
I have a slow but continuous leak from the rack at the centerline of the car, right near where the two struts are bolted together. The oil runs down the transmission and burns off on the driver's side cat converter.
There is no Audi dealer within 100 miles, but the VW dealer checked on info for the Passat (A4) rack and said "either an 'O' ring kit will fix it, or it won't! We won't know until it comes out. In which case, $1000+ for a rack, plus labor in both cases of course." Although my A6 is a 1996, it's possible that the same basic design is involved on other model years. Anyone have any experience with this problem?

I have no first hand exposure to this problem aside from once instance where my fluid tank went low and never leaked again after the refill. ('00A6 4.2)
I have heard that rack failure is something that does happen fairly often on the A6. Not that it is in any-way related but I replaced a rack on my 5000S way back in the early 80's

You can get a fix it kit for the leaky rack.
Check the tech section at s-cars.org. After replacing two racks on my 94 S4 I found out about this kit which saves you hundreds in repair costs.. Same parts for the ur S4/S6/A6 I believe.

Tried to get info from the tech section at s-cars.org, as suggested, but the S6 section is NG. Anyone any way of getting at this, or any other input on rack rebuild kits for the 96 A6?
