question for a friend..
i am an a4 driver, but one of my buddies is looking to get a 98-00 2.8 a6. he really likes the car, but he is worried about the reliability of it. i told him about the audi assured warranty, but he wanted some feedback from a6 drivers. if you could help me out, that would be really appreciated. i am just going to send him the link to this question.

I've had my 99 2.8 A6Q Tip for several months now and..
love the car. I to was concerned with the reliability of the car. As always make sure that you get the service manual and any other receipts for anything that has been done to the car. If it does not have the proper documentation I'd be a little suspect. Get a "Car Fax" by the VIN number and it should pull the vehicles history, i.e. clean title, accidents, and odometer readings. If you're lucky you'll find a certified pre-owned Audi that has the remaining warranty. I made sure that I purchased the extended warranty also. This help me out, I had to get my gauge display replaced with new one and it was $900 + labor. The extended warranty was well worth the extra $$$. So far it has been 8 mos. with the car and it is solid as can be. Keep looking for what you want until you find it, do not settle for second best. I looked for several weeks before finding my current A6 with only 30k on the clock. It had all service records from McDonald Audi in Denver, they also verified all services for me when I took it in for an oil change. There are a lot of them out there that were lease returns and have between 50-60k on them, some good other a total POS.

the 2.8 and the q are basic, tried and true Audi systems.
Anyone buying almost any used car nowadays needs to get a reliable legit warranty, either from the manufacturer or a third party. Or sock away equivalent amounts in a bank account, because things do go wrong and they do cost real money (all makes and models).
Oh, and try to get a stealership to look up whether all the various recalls have been done.

My 99 Avant: No problem, mon!
Just hit one year. Aside from an occasional misfire when I got it (fixed by 45K service) I have had zero problems. If it's an Audi dealer, make sure your friend negotiates Audi Assured. Dealer cost is $1000. 100,000 mi/24 months. Requires a $50 copay each visit; maintenance not included.
