Default help plz.. Yellow cab hit my car and ran away!!

Some yellow cab hit my rear bumper and ran away.. I was trying to catch him, but couldn't even read the license plate.. I talked to police, but he said only thing he can do is report an accident. If I report the accident, will my insurance go up? Should I report the accedent? and can anyone tell me how much would it coast to repair the rear bumper? (he made a huge scratch) Thank you..

Default What's a yellow cap? And

if you talk to your insurance agent it won't affect your rates anyway, and at least you'll get an official answer.

Default Probably better to repair it at your own cost...

I had a pretty significant bumper scratch on my A4. IIRC, it was in the $250-350 range to fix. As long as the plastic isn't broken, which may mean having to replace the bumper cap (over $1000), you're probably looking at something in that ballpark for the repair. That's certainly less than your insurance deductible anyway, so don't mention it to them and don't report the accident. Unless you have the cab's medallion number nothing will come of it anyway.

Default Rear bumper cap replacement...

My '01 4.2 was lightly rear-ended resulting in a deep scratch and small hole (from the other car's license plate bolt) in the plastic bumper. According to my shop, the rear bumper cover is $540 and the total cost estimate is just over $1k.

This is out of my insurance policy:

An at-fault accident shall NOT include the following:
-Involved in an accident in which the motor vehicle was struck by a hit-and-run driver, if such accident was reported to the proper authorities within 24 hours
-For an accident in which the motor vehicle was struck in the rear by another vehicle and a driver insured under the policy has not been convicted of a moving violation in connection with the accident.
...

Granted your insurance may be different, but I think they are all quite similar in situations like that, in other words you should be safe to report the accident to them.

As far as the bumper repair cost is concerned, - cost me about $1,000 - 1,100 to have it replaced by the dealer a few years ago. This is probably the worst case scenario.
