Default Who's done the AT service on an A6 Tip? Costs?

I don't believe in lifetime AT fluid so will probably pay to have the AT fluid & filter changed soon (31k now). Changing ATF every 30k or so will make any auto trans last a lot longer.

I figure $7/qt. for 4 qts. of Red Line ATF: what have folks paid for labor costs and the ATF Filter (please say if you had it done at a dealer or indy shop). My local excellent trusty indy shop figures 1.5 hrs., so about $110 plus ATF & filter.

Thx,
Jon

Default Use only the Audi Fluid!!!!!

Do not use Redline fluid in your tranny. Use only Audi fluid (I forgot what the brand name is). Probably about $16/quart at the dealer.

JimR did it on his A6 avant.

P.S. if you want to see what it entails, click the URL below.

http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/autotranservicing.html</a

Heres what the tranny fluid that was in there looked like....

My dad and PaulW sent in an Oil Sample to a company (Paul help me out here) And the stuff was just plain nasty compared to the new Fluid, This was with approx 62k miles IIRC.

Default You might want to look at the ZF approved fluids and ponder why Redline isn't on the list.

Maybe search the A8 forum a little. Filter is about $50 bucks. Depends on the car and the transmission.

I think you need a tranny pan gasket too and a Bentley manual and a VAG-COM. I really don't know. My car is an old beater.

ZF Fluids

Default So far with 58k on the odo. I've changed the fluid twice.

Its cheap insurance. Did not fnd any issues with the tranny or the fluid. As far as who changed it, since the dealer require special tools I always take it to them. They always do a terrific job.

Default Filter too?

If you haven't done a filter, do one on the next go-round.

Default Why do you say that? Red Line says its fluid is fine

I contacted Red Line and they said that while they have not submitted it to Audi for formal approval, Red Line ATF is fine.

Specifically, they replied: "I would recommend the D4ATF in the Audi Tiptronic transmission, it is compatible but has not been submitted for approval and is red in color."

Why specifically do you not recommend it, it's among the best stuff out there?

Thanks,
Jon

Default Agree, I don't consider AT fluid/filter DIY unless one has a lift...

it's a dirty messy job and requires more care & cleanliness than just an oil change, so I let my trusted indy tech do it.

Default Gee, it's red in color? Well that's enough for me!

Seriously, did they really say that in the letter? Yikes!
