Default What goes bad on control arm?

I've read up on numberous control arm failures, mostly lower control arm. And I'm wondering, what exactly goes bad? Is it the bushings? If so, can the bushings alone be replaced?

Is a bad control arm a safety issue?

Default It's the rubber bushing on the control arm that attaches to the frame

It can rip, plus it has a joint that attaches to the strut that can go bad, like a tie rod end.

They can be had cheap on ebay, about $100 each for both the lower curved and straight one. Just replace the whole arm, they are the same for the A4, A6, A8 and Passat.
