Default Yakima vs Thule

Just started looking for a roof rack for my A6 1999 sedan, the choice is pretty much between Yakima and Thule. About the same price, people on this forum seem to be happy with both.

I was leaning towards Yakima, but suddenly noticed, that Yakima's maximum alowable load is only 100lb, while it is 165lb for Thule. Any idea why such a huge difference in load capacity?

BTW, if anybody is aware of a cheaper alternative, I would appreciate the information.

Default I have Thule and I'am happy, but have you looked into Audi's roof rack?

you can add all the accessories form both Tule and Yakima, and you can find it for about $90.00 from either Ebay or a dealer sale.

Default There's a huge thread on this in Jan or Feb in the allroad forum.

And it all boils down to 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, from what I can tell.

I have Thule for both Audis, and a ski carrier. Works great. Fit kits for the A8 weren't common, bars and feet for the Avant were an in-stock item at the REI down the street. They use the same "grab the roof rails" system as the Suby Outback, which is probably why they were a stocked item.

Default Don't know how the pricing compares but I've had very good experiece with the factory racks

And I've loaded them heavily from time to time. They're very quick on and off and if you use their new bike rack it clamps on and off in seconds with no tools. Probably not the cheapest, but very well built and easy to use. Just another option to compare.

I have had both and found that the quality of the accessories was better with the Yakima. You can also order many different lengths of bars and the longest ones are heavier gauge. I have the longest one and it's long enough to haul two canoes, side-by-side. It depends on what you want to haul..HTH, :-)

I've had a Yamika for years. I think it's a little easier to put on and take off.

Default I've had Thule for years.

Love my Thule, but I wore out a full upright bike rack a few years back. They tell you not to exceed 90kmph (~50mph). So I'm sure that flying on the highway and cruising on back roads with the bikes on top didn't help.

I've got a box, ski carrier (although using the sack now), and a few bike racks.

I might be wrong, but I tend to see more Thule's than Yak's in the Northeast.
