Ash tray drawer, will not stay closed

The ash tray drawer in my 2002 S6 will not stay closed.

I am able to push the drawer completely closed but the spring mechanism inside pushes it open again. I suspect latch mechanism is broken.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

It looks like removing the ashtray drawer could be very difficult.
