Default Compare and Contrast... 4.2 vs. 2.7t...

Is it as simple as cruiser vs. sprinter, brutish horses vs. nimble handler, muscle vs. technology, bulletproof vs. high stress turbo boost?

Why do YOU choose one over the other?

Price aside.

4.2 is smoother, quicker throttle response, and for FY 2001 was the only way to get certain options. In the real world, the 3.0 is more than adequate. 4.2 can be ponderous, but is a nice highway cruiser, especially at high speeds. Also, I didn't want the risk of greater unreliability with a turbocharged engine.

Default Ask AUJ - he has actualy owned both. But for mee it was

4.2 = sweet flares, V8 is trouble free, $5000-7000 more.

2.7 - 6 speed (had to have), add chip and get fantastic performance, less$$, less reliable

I presume you are refering to the 2.7T... Am I incorrect in thinking the 2.7T generates 250hp?

Default The S in the A6 line comes only one way.

V8. ;-)

The V8 moves the A6 with a fair amount of authority. Probably even more so than the 2.7t. The stick is nice to have and if there had been a true sport package on the 2.7t back in 2000 I would have that instead of the S4 I had for awhile.

The V8 (esp in S6 form ) is a very nice motor. Nothing like a V8 in terms of pull and sound.

Default These pro/con sessions are nice (until they turn fighty), but what you need to do is to go drive

them yourself.

You'll know which one you want.

Default No need for turning 'fighty'... civilized analysis please

I *have* driven both. I bought a 2.7T six speed. At the time it seemed to me to be the more balanced of the two cars. All elements seemed in proportion to one another. Very predictable response in my opinion. But now I second guess myself. All of a sudden I am thinking about that visceral 8 cylinder rumble and rage. I also spend far too much time worrying about the reliability and long term longevity of the turbocharged A6. I guess I am just the tortured type.
