97 A6 Front Ball Joint Removal, help.

I am removing the ball joint in order to remove the axle shaft. The bolt is out, I pry the arm down, the joint comes out about an inch, but no more. I have a jack under the hub, have tried jacking the wheel up quite a bit, standing/jumping on the pry bar but still no budge. It seems to be binding in the hole. I am going to loosen the sway bar on both sides of the vehicle next in order to get some more play in the system, perhaps loosen where the control arm bolts into the frame. Any ideas would be appreciated.
