Default Thanks Forum! Jet Engine Noice From Fan Fixed!!!!

I did a search on this forum earlier this morning on the fan noise I was experiencing and finally got the problem fixed. As you may know from my previous post, I took my car to the dealer for the LQ bumper and a screaming fan that sounded like a siren. Two weeks and a new water pump (that I did not need) later, the fan was still screaming the dealer told me this was normal??? Some previous posts on this site mentioned that the aux fan can get debris in it causing the other main fan to go into overdrive. I raced down to the parking lot a few minutes ago and grabbed a flashlight to discover a rubber gasket was clogging the passanger side aux fan. After a bit of a struggle I was able to squeeze me skinny arm down there and pull it out. Alas, no more scream from the engine!! I called the dealer and told them I finally found the culprit and he asked me to bring the rubber seal in so his mechanic could see it. I am still out $650 for a new and wrongly replaced water pump but the dealer is giving me a new front bumper for my cracked one. I figure it is a wash. My advice to everyone is please do a search before you take you car in for a repair (especially if you are out of warranty). I only wish I would have done this sooner. Thanks again...Calvin

Probably wasn't long before you needed the water pump anyway.

I think there was even a TSB on this - very common issue.

Default i think I might be having the same issue right now...

I also had LQ recall service done a week or so ago and just last night was noticing the high pitched scream.... I'll have too look into this more as I just started to notice it last night (music too loud)

thanks for doing the legwork ; )

Default There was a TSB, got a couple of it around, somewhere, but....

From what I remember from the bulletin, if the primary cooling fan thermostat fails, the secondary fan stays on pretty much all the time.
Easy fix, change the thermostat. But regarding the famous "whine" of that secondary fan, that sound is is both legendary and normal. It is loud when it is operating under normal conditions. The dealer told me that it will also kick in briefly at start-up, if the climate control system also brings the A/C immediately into operation. Some people might have some real issues, but for the most part I think some folks are chasing gremlins that are not really there, as far as that secondary fan is concerned.

Default symptoms

An easy diagnosis (car cold) is to put the windows down, climate control on, then start the car and idle. In maybe 20-30 sec you'll hear the driver's side aux fan kick in, and grow in pitch and volume. This is independent of engine speed, and it may cycle on/off until the car warms up. The wind-down whine is also very pronounced when you stop the engine after driving. I don't dispute that the fan whines at max speed, but it doesn't go to max speed if the right aux fan works.

Then you can play hunt-the-jammed-gasket. Mine was a bit hard to spot, but you could feel the fan was jammed. Rotates v. easily if OK.

Default You are right about the fan normally being loud but...

when the right side fan is out of commission it sounds like an air raid. Not the coolest noise to have when you are driving up to some hot babes in bikinis as they are walking the strip down here in Florida. It is about 60% louder when the left aux fan is working solo. I was ready to pull my hair out especially after the dealer told me the noise was normal. Anyway, issue resolved and life goes on. Thanks again for all the input....Calvin

nice free bumper
the bumper is replace free of charge if damaged
that's the lq recall
you should get your $650.00 dollars back
that was an error from the mechanic
if not call audi of america and tell them
they will give you your money back and you'll have a brand new water pump for free
