I can't believe I really did it...
...but yesterday I actually put my car up for sale. It was one of the most difficult things I've done lately, since no car has ever meant as much to me as my A6 (and I've been a bonafide "car guy" since about age 3). It's just that as much as I love my 2000 2.8q (especially since putting on the Eibach Pro System, new 18" wheels & tires), the 4.2 has always been the one I've really lusted for. The combination of 1.9% money, $2K in Audi Loyalty $$$, and my dealer's willingness to sell me a new, in-stock 4.2 Sport configured exactly as I'd order it for next-to-nothing over invoice is just too good to pass up. Where things broke down was in the trade-in value they'd give me. At first, I was willing to just walk and forget it - after all, I still have a great car that I'm thrilled with. After thinking it over, though, I decided to put my car on the block and see what happens. If I can get a decent price for it, someone will end up with an absolutely immaculate (and loaded) 2000 2.8q and I'll end up with a new '03 Ming Blue/Platinum 4.2 Sport. Either way, I won't be disappointed. I'll keep you posted.

They won't hold it without a deposit (nor should they be expected to).
I'm not willing to put any money down unless & until I know that I can sell my car for a reasonable price. It's just not worth it to me to take a bath on my car, even though the 4.2 is so alluring.
The good news is that the salesperson is great - he has agreed to keep the new 4.2 in their off-site storage lot (completely fenced in, a mile away from the dealership, out of customers' sight) for as long as possible, to minimize the chance of someone else buying it. Obviously, he won't hide it for long, but I appreciate his willingness to buy me even a little time. I guess it helps a little that he's the same person who sold me my current Audi.

If he's buying in California, there are no tax savings other than
he doesn't need to pay tax on the sale of his 2.8.
You pay tax on the entire purchase amount of the new car, not the difference between the new car and the trade-in value.
