E55: 40-mile test drive today...
...thanks to a generous sales person at a Benz dealer in FL. It's a real torque monster, gorgeous interior, great ride-handling combo -- but it's not perfect. Bothersome to me was the tranny's tendency to sometimes search several gears before settling in. And the ESP pulled a bit too much to the left during one stomp on I-75, which was slightly wet from rain that had stopped about 10-20 minutes before we got there. There also was some vibration at times, possibly from wheels needing balancing. I'm hopeful the RS6 I've ordered (lucky me!) won't share these characteristics, cuz if it does, or if it has the "knobbly" ride reported in one mag (also called "too stiff for many [buyers]" in the Spring issue of Quattro Quarterly), I may just keep my S4, which is chipped and therefore somewhat of a torque monster too. For now, my read on the E55 is that it's an excellent car but not worth twice the price of a B5 S4 when they were new.
