So my warning lights (brake and ABS) came on
out of the blue for a few seconds and turned off. The brake light flashed intermitingly and the ABS was solid. Brake fluid checked to be at normal levels. My front pads can probably be replaced since they are more than half worn. Did these lights come on due to a future warning to replace the brake pads or do I have something serious happening to my braking system? I guess the only brite side is that I now have an excuse to upgrade my brakes with new pads and slotted rotors.

Yeah I had that happen to me as well, I have a 1999 A6 2.8 Silver, i live in New York City and as we all know this pass winter was crazy, so much so I dont think we are gonna ever see spring we just might jump right into summer up here. Anyway one night after we had got hit with like 16 inches of the white stuff i went out to drive around and let the SUV punks know we got quattro going on!!! Well I got a little to happy and went up a street that has never been plowed before got stuck and tried to do the reverse, drive teknik to inch out, it didnt work and I had to dig it out and just had back down the block in reverse. I guess the abs and the brake system got overworked cuz my brake light was flashing and the ABS system light was on. I got worried but was so damn tired I just put her away and when I woke up the next morning the light was on again but after like a minute of diving the ABS light turned off. Til this day it hasnt happened again, so maybe it does it cuz it gets over worked or something, either way I would like to find out for sure for the next time.

My have loose or disconnected ABS wire....
It happended to me when I had my Eibach's put on. The mechanic accidentally disconnected one of the sensor plugs. There is a wire going to each wheel on the back side of hub. I put the VAG on it to see what was goning on since like you all I saw were lights. It told me what was wrong and which wheel. The plug was only partially in. Seated the plug and cleared codes and good to go. So if you have had someone under the car recently you may want to check that.
