NHTSA Safety Recall - axle load exceeds tire rating (for 2001 A6 2.7T's with 225/45R17)!

Recall Date : MAR 28, 2003
Component: TIRES

Potential Number Of Units Affected : 1360

Summary:
CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.7L ENGINES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 110, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS". <b>THE CALCULATED VEHICLE NORMAL LOAD EXCEEDS THE ALLOWABLE WEIGHT OF THE AXLE LOAD WITH TIRE DIMENSION 225/45R 17 91Y BY 19KG.</b>

Consequence:

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE ALL FIVE TIRES. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT AUDI AT 1-800-822-2834.

I didn't know that Audi offered 225's (vs 235's) as an OE choice for the US 2.7t

Does that mean I get free tires?

I was just about to bring my car in, along with 4 tires from tire rack to have them replaced - and the tires that are on the car are 225/45r17 91y!

One of the first things I noticed when I received the car..

Was that the tires looked too 'small' for the rims - the A6 is a pretty beefy car, and the 225's look to be too low of a profile for my tastes.

I have my first service appointment Tuesday, and already received tires from TireRack since the car is in desperate need of new shoes (at just under 20k miles). I think I'll leave them in the garage and try to get the dealership to put new rubber on it under the recall!

Tire Update

As an FYI - according to Audi, my car isn't covered. They can't specifically tell me why, but I can only guess that perhaps the Automatic Transmission version is the version that's covered (due to increased weight?)

Who knows................
