OK - how did I do this? Rear tag lamps on only, car at rest.

OK - how did I do this? Rear tag lamps on only, car at rest.
2002 A6 2.7tip. Lux and conv. pax.
Last night we parked in the garage. I was into the trunk for something. It took a bit, the interior lights went out, shut the trunk and the rear plate lights were on, nothing else.
Humm...says I. This is neat. I waited. and waited. Lamps still on. Tried the trunk again, opened a door, closed the door, waited again. Interior lights go out, plate lamps still on. Placed key in ignition, turned on, turned off. Plate lights are off.
I have tried to repeat this event, but I cannot seem to make it happen again. Did Control Area Network go on strike, or maybe a built in 10 minute delay, or what?
Just curious if anyone ever have this or similar happen.
