Default oil change help 99 a6

I recently got a 99 A6 with no owners manual. Went to change the engine oil today (have done numerous oil changes on many of my VWs, Saabs, Porsches, etc) but apparently, what i drained was not the engine oil ...
The rectangular pan with a allen wrench plug apparently is not engine oil ... my guess is that its oil for the differential, grey looking liquid that looks rather watery compared to engine oil.

Big question .. how do I put it back? where is the filler valve?

And I did find the real oil pan ...

oh yea, it is a quattro

To get at the oil pan, you have to first remove the plastic engine cover, which is visible underneath the car-just a series of quick release screws. Did you remove that cover? If not, I do presume you probably worked the wrong section of the car. Also, you need to replace a washer for the oil pan drain plug with every change. Your best bet is to order OEM oil filters (about $9) and washers (about 65 cents) from Clairparts.com

I am not sure, but sounds like you may have just drained your transmission fluid, which at $9 per quart x 8 quarts, will be expensive to replace. I think your car is likely going to need to be flatbedded to the nearest dealer.

Default This part I am not certain about....

because I never had a need to look. To replace trans. fluid, the plastic engine cover on top of the engine has to be removed. BUT-There can be contamination issues now that you removed it. That's a $10K transmission in that car, I think you are going to be stuck with having to play it safe, and have the vehicle transported to a dealer (call AAA, if you are a member, they'll pay for it). I don't think it's a good idea to try and undo this accident on your own, at this point. Maybe somebody here with a Bentley manual can at least help you isolate for sure which reservoir you drained?

Default No, top of engine isn't involved.

Give me a minute to find a link.

Default ATF fill & c.

art

First - Confirm you're a 2.8 tip. If so, I've done a tranny service on that set-up. Here's a link to some links with more info than you probably want to digest right now. There are some pictures of the bottom of the car with the tranny pan removed, which you should be able to use to tell if that's the area from which you removed the drain plug. From your description, it seems likely.

Second - The ZF trannys are very picky about ATF level, and do not have a top fill. You fill the tranny through a raised hole in the tranny pan, at a time when the tranny fluid is in a defined temperature range. You measure this range with a VAG tool (dealer computer analysis set up) or a VAG-COM, which is a VAG tool emulator running on a laptop.
