Default 2002 Audi A6Q Brakes problem

Hello guys! I am so excited to finaly being able to drive Audi Quattro and also very excited about joining you here at this forum.

I have a problem with my brakes. My A6Q is at about 18K and the rear brakes were metal to metal. It seems like the car uses rears more than fronts since I have more than 1/2 inch left on the front pads. I am a little disappointed so I went and drove another A6Q hoping it will feel diferent. Well, it's the same thing. I also drove A4Q and ...oh boy, that car stops the way I want. Have you heard anything on the above subject? Please help! Thank you! Alex

Default If the amount of brake dust on my wheels is any indication...

...mine do the same thing. Every time I wash my 2000 2.8q, the rear wheels have considerably more brake dust on them than the fronts. No problems with stopping power or premature wear of pads.

Default I don't have this problem

2002 A6 w/ 2.7T - little consumption and brake dust with the rear pads. Lots of dust on the front wheels. I can't believe that your rear braks are worn that much. There has to be something wrong.

Default That is what I think too.....

....and I will "scream" very loud until I don't get this resolved with Audi. I am originally from Europe, have been all over the place driving all kinds of cars, but first time see something like this. If the car was designed this way, they should have equal brakes on all 4 wheels, like RS6. It is VERY disappointing for me. It took twice the mileage till my front rottors got some shine, while the rears looked worn out already - very strange! Thanks for the reply! Alex

Default There's something wrong here. And I don't mean just dust!

The fronts see much heavier use than rears. That's why rear pads and calipers are smaller. No way rears should dust more or wear out faster. Maybe faulty rear pads. Or a mechanical problem - like stuck pistons (unlikely if both rears are done). Or maybe the antilock system is messed up? If so, I'll bet your rears glow after a fast night run - ever looked to see?

But since you're under warranty - take it in. At least they'll give you new pads and check the system operation.

BTW, from all I've heard, the A4 brakes are much better performers than the stock A6. My 2.7 was kinda mushy from when I got it - even my 99 2.8 was better - hence the Stoptech upgrade.

Good luck, and please post an update. This is very curious!

Default You are 100% right.......

....and I totally agree with you. I have already contacted Audi via email explaining the situation. The other day at the dealer, one of the main Audi salesman was swearing that if I ask ANY autotech I will hear that my rears sohuld go first. I couldn't believe my ears!!! I suspect that many Audi people know about this problem, but nobody wants to tell you about it. It is VERY interesting that it happens with the old 2.8 and the new 3.0 only! I will certainly update the thread as I progress with this issue. Thanks! Alex
