Tired and Looking for Quiet/Peformance: do ES-100's really suck?

I'll be purchasing some new shoes for my '01 A6 2.7T sport soon, and plan to go with new 17" rims and 235/45/17 tires.

My first choice for rubber were the Yoko ES-100's, but buyer comments on TireRack were unfavorable and critical about high noise and poor straight line tracking.

I'm looking for reasonable performance (holds a straight line on highway, sharp-turn-in in corners) but a quiet ride is also very important. My old '65 StingRay convertible meets my peformance needs - my A6 is for fast, comfortable touring. What to choose?

Other Yokos?
Michelin Pilot?
Toyo?
Pirelli?
Conti?

Your comments are much appreciated. It sucks to spend on tires only to be disappointed!

I just replaced my Yoko AVS db tires with Firestone Firehawk SZ 50 EP's and have been very happy with them. If you're looking for summer tires that grip great in wet or dry conditions and are very quiet (quieter than the AVS) then you should consider these. The price is reasonable and they got great reviews. I put 255/40-17's on my '01 4.2.

I've had them a while now, and I sure don't think they suck. ...(more)

Anyhow, how do tires suck? My ES100's are quieter than the 730's I had previously. I think they are a good all around tire, not the greatest, perhaps, but look at the price. They track just fine.

You should also consider Bridgestone Turanza LS-Z's. Traction and quiet.

I tried the Yokes in the DBvs. Like the tire but got loud real quick. Running Dunlop 5000S's right now and really like.

Falken ZE512

Just replaced the Bridgestone RE950 with the ZE 512. What a difference. No noise,harsh ride, and very good hanlding with a 30k warranty. Very close match up to the Dunlop SP5000. I have run both.
